Polyvagal Theory: 3 Nervous System States
Social anxiety often arises from a sense of threat, and our work together will focus on helping you build a stronger sense of safety and connection. Polyvagal Theory focuses on the physiology of that sense of danger, and how we can utilize Polyvagal Exercises to engage our body’s natural calming mechanism. As you feel more secure, you’ll begin to approach social situations with more ease.
Ventral Vagal
Safe. Social. EngagedVagus nerve is active and functioning well. You feel calm, centered, and seek out social connection. Your heart beats slower, your breath is slower, and you have reduced stress hormones.
Sympathetic
Fight/Flight. Anxious. FranticSympathetic nervous system has been activated. You feel anxious, irritable, and probably worrying a lot. Your heart is beating faster, you are breathing shallower, you have trouble focusing and you may have digestive issues.
Dorsal Vagal
Numb. Shut Down. DepressedDorsal vagal is in shutdown. You want to be alone, lack motivation, and withdrawn. You struggle with fatigue, difficulty thinking, and you have great difficulty functioning.
